Chapter 15: Done With Him

We shoved the binder back in place, and it sat one inch proud of the others.

The side door was already opening down the hall.

Gus took my wrist and pulled me into the supply closet, and shut the door on a mop, six boxes of gloves and the two of us.

It was a closet for one hygienist and a vacuum.

My back was against a shelf of paper bibs. His chest was against my front. There was nowhere else for either of us to be.

"Don't breathe," he whispered.

"I have to breathe."

"Breathe quietly."

Selena's heels crossed the hall and went into her office. A light switched on under the door.

She was humming. It was a song from a children's show, and she hit every note.

"Laminator," she said to herself, pleased, and I heard it click on.

It needs two minutes to heat up. It ticked while it did, and it was the longest sound I have ever heard.

Then her phone rang, and she put it on speaker.

"Monday, eight o'clock," said the lawyer's voice. "You're sure she'll come."

"I'll drive her. I'll bring her coffee."

"She'll want to read it first."

"She never reads," Selena said fondly. "She trusts whoever is holding the coffee. It took me twelve years to learn that, and I'm going to enjoy it."

Gus's hand went flat on the shelf beside my head.

"And the husband?"

"Served at the store, in the afternoon. In front of customers. That's the only kind of embarrassment he can't fix with a hinge."

I felt Gus breathe in against me.

"He'll fight," the lawyer said.

"With what? She signed. In her own hand, and her hand is a mess. Nobody can say it isn't hers."

The chair creaked. Her heels came three steps toward the shelves.
