Chapter 19: The Slap
Lana did not make a sound.
She put one hand to her cheek.
Then she took it away and looked at her fingers.
I was between them before I had decided to move.
"Out," I said to my mother.
"She insulted me."
"The guard is on the porch. Walk to him, or he walks you."
"Tanner, you saw it. She provoked me."
"There is a camera over the stove, and I saw it with my own eyes."
My mother's glance went to the black dome in the ceiling.
For the first time all night, she looked her age.
The guard came in at a run.
He was a big man with a gentle face, and he took my mother's elbow.
"Ma'am. Let's go."
"Take your hands off me. I'm his mother."
"Yes, ma'am. You can tell the officer."
"Officer?"
"Call it in," Lana said.
She had not moved from the stool.
Her cheek had gone red in the shape of four fingers, and her voice was even.
"Lana," I said.
"She hit me in your kitchen, in front of a camera. I'm not going to let that become something we talk about at dinner."
