Chapter 8: The Statement

On Sunday I walked into my mother's dining room in the navy suit and the new shoes.

The table was set for thirteen.

My mother had invited the whole church.

The pastor sat at her right hand, with his wife.

Four church ladies filled the next chairs, each with a casserole dish on her lap.

A neighbor and her teenage son sat at the end.

My mother had put out the gold-rimmed plates, and a bowl of dinner rolls shaped like roses.

"Here he is!" she cried. "My boy. My baby. Our miracle."

Everyone clapped.

I sat at the head of the table, in the chair my father had never once let me use.

Shelby poured me wine.

I turned the glass over.

Kyle leaned across to whisper in my ear.

"Eat first. Then we sign."

"Of course."

The first course was pot roast.

The second course was my mother, standing up with a fork against her glass.

"I want to thank you all for coming," she said. "It has been a hard week for this family. But the Lord brings the lost home."

"Amen," said a church lady.

"My son has made a mistake, and he has been forgiven. And now, because he is a generous young man, he has decided to take care of his family."

She turned and beamed at me.

"Tanner, say a few words."

I stood up.

Twelve faces looked up at me, flushed with gravy and good feeling.

"Thank you for coming," I said. "Mom, did you find the mortgage statement?"

A small ripple went through the table.

My mother laughed.

"Oh, honey, not at the dinner table."
