Chapter 22: The Pool

The wrap party was held in the ballroom with forty-two mirrors.

Every guest was seen at once from nine sides, eating a sausage roll.

The cast came in their own clothes, which made them look like strangers.

Fenella wore the green dress.

She had a gold star on her lapel, which she had not been given, and a cash tin under her arm.

"Pool's at sixty-one," she told Kit, at the door.

"Closes tonight. Anyone who has a date left can stand up and be wrong in public."

"I don't have a date," said Kit.

"I know," said Fenella.

"That's what makes it so good."

At nine o'clock a woman in a dark suit came through the double doors with two assistants and no phone in her hand.

The room parted for her without being told.

She was from the broadcaster, and she had watched both cuts of the finale.

Rupert crossed the floor to meet her at a jog.

"Love this," he said.

"Love the turnout. Love that you came."

"I watched your version first," said the woman.

"Mm, yes. The Earl on the stairs, alone."

"Beautiful," said Rupert.
