Chapter 21: Page Twelve
"And so was this," Demi said.
The roof went silent.
Six cameras held on her, and the red lights burned.
On the side screen the chat stopped scrolling for the first time in three years.
Dennis took a step toward the director.
"Cut the feed," he said, quietly and fast. "Go to black."
"We're live," the director said, in his headset, his voice shaking. "I can't, I don't have the..."
"Go to black."
"He doesn't have the board," said the grip with the huge forearms, from his apple box.
He didn't stand.
His finger stayed on the prompter control, and the glass kept scrolling.
Demi held the ring in her fist and looked at the lens.
She wasn't looking at Wyatt, or the vice president, or Dennis.
She was looking at the dark circle of the main camera.
"The man who wrote it is not in this frame," she said.
Her voice shook, and she let it.
"He wrote everything you loved about us. He wrote the kitchen and the stairs and the first kiss, and he never once got to stand where you could see him."
Someone in the sponsor's row said, "What is this?"
"He was my boyfriend for six years."
A sound went over the roof.
It came from the guests, and the crew, and the people at the rail with their phones up.
Isla's hand tightened until my fingers hurt.
On the screen the prompter turned again, and I saw the next line come up in white.
It was Wyatt's.
I had written it at four in the morning, in a production closet, with the music still coming through the wall.
I had given it to him because it was the one thing in that script he could not have refused to say.
