Chapter 19: Eleven Boxes
They came for Jesse at six, in the rain.
Sallow and two guards, and a man he'd never seen with a video camera in a plastic rain hood.
"Big day, Seventeen," Sallow said through his taped nose. "Try to look natural."
They walked him to the rappel tower behind the gym.
Forty feet of wet timber with a platform on top and a rope hanging down the face.
The whole class stood in formation at the bottom.
Gorham had made it a drill.
Rappel qualification, the board said by the mess door. All cadets observe.
Ollie stood in the front row with his nose taped and his eyes black.
He looked at Jesse and didn't look away.
Twenty-Two stood beside him with his fists closed.
"Climb," Sallow said.
Jesse climbed.
The cameraman filmed him from the ground, every rung.
At the top the platform was slick and the fog had come down so low he could barely see the formation.
Somebody was already up there.
A big man in a black tactical jacket, with his back to the ground.
For one second Jesse's heart jumped.
