Chapter 20: Laundry Run
"Then every one of them comes home," Jesse said. "All eleven."
Luke laughed without any sound.
"Home to what? A box? A wife who married somebody else?"
"Home to a mother who still goes on Sundays."
Luke went quiet.
"Then they don't come home," Jesse said. "Home comes to them."
Luke turned his head.
"Graduation has bleachers, doesn't it?"
"For the board," Luke said slowly. "And the clients."
"Not anymore. Families," Jesse said. "And a lot of phones."
He felt it then.
"Can you get up the lookout without anyone asking why?"
"I run that ridge every morning. Why?"
"There's a loose board under the cot. Bring me what's under it."
Luke looked at him a long time.
"The Commander's?"
"His backfire," Jesse said.
"He's in the basement under admin," Luke said. "Gorham goes down every night with a coffee and sits outside his cell and talks."
"About what?"
"Retirement. A Zero who gets old. What happens to him." Luke rubbed his face. "He wants the Commander to beg."
"Does he?"
"Not so far."
