Chapter 5: The Judge's Dinner

The Lindemanns ate Sunday dinner at five, in the Oakwood house, at a table with leaves that came out for company.

Grady's father sat at the head.

Grady sat at his right with his hand around my wrist under the tablecloth.

Lacey sat across from me and pushed a green bean from one side of her plate to the other.

Nobody had mentioned the courthouse steps in the first twenty minutes.

I took it as an accomplishment.

Under my napkin, a folded paper packet sat in my skirt pocket, with last night's pill inside.

Marshall had texted at noon: Bring it to me, don't bring it to dinner.

I had brought it to dinner.

I told myself that was the first thing I'd done in ten months that was entirely for me.

"Cora, dear." The judge set his fork down on the edge of his plate. "Let's talk about the family."

"All right," I said.

"This has been a difficult weekend."

"It has."

"A public figure has to protect his household." He looked at his son, then at me, with a face that had read a thousand verdicts. "I've drafted a short statement. You'll read it Monday, with Grady beside you."

The fixer, who had been standing by the sideboard all this time, stepped forward and laid a single sheet beside my glass.

It said that I had full confidence in my husband's fidelity, and that the young woman had my compassion and the family's prayers.

It said the young woman was receiving care.

"Receiving what care?" I asked.

"She's under stress." The judge folded his hands. "We've arranged a quiet place for her to rest through the pregnancy. Private. Excellent staff."
