Chapter 10: Brothers

Cam came back and stood in the doorway.

I lay under the blanket with my heart in my throat.

"Jude," he said, very quietly.

"Why is there a foot sticking out of your bed?"

I looked.

My foot was sticking out of the end of the blanket, toes curled.

Jude closed his eyes.

"Cam."

"Don't," Cam said.

"Don't say it was a pillow."

I sat up, holding the sheet over my chest.

My hair was wild, my mouth swollen, and there was no version of this that looked innocent.

"Hi," I said.

Cam's face did a series of things.

It went white, then red, then a kind of gray that scared me.

"Out," he said.

"Kitchen. Both of you. Put clothes on."

He shut the door.

We dressed in total silence.

Jude's hands shook so badly he buttoned his shirt wrong and gave up.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"I'm so sorry."

"Don't be sorry to me," I said.

"Be a man to him."

We walked into the kitchen together.

Cam stood at the counter with his phone in his hand.

He turned it around.

It was Brock's photo, the one through the window.

"A guy named Brock sent me this at six o'clock," Cam said.

"I drove around for four hours. I wanted to believe it was fake."

"It isn't," Jude said.

"I asked you where she was. You said asleep."

"I know."

"You looked me in the face."

"I know," Jude said.

"I did, and I'm sorry."

"I was going to tell you tonight."

"I was trying to."

"Tonight," Cam said, and laughed without any humor.

"After I saw it."

"After you let me thank you for looking out for her at a house meeting."

"That was my mistake," Jude said.

"Not hers."

"You were the one guy," Cam said.

His voice cracked.

"Six years, man."

"You were the one guy I'd have trusted with my life, and you went around me like I was nothing."
