Chapter 14: The Key
The key turned, and the front door of my house swung open for her.
Danielle stepped inside.
"Hi, Cam," she said.
"You've gotten taller."
Cam stood on the porch with his mouth open and his car keys dangling from one finger.
"That's not your door," he said.
"Jude gave me a key in August, for emergencies."
"Is this an emergency?" I asked.
"Mom is furious, and I have nowhere to go."
She said it sweetly, with a little wobble in her voice, and I watched Cam's face start to soften.
He had known her since she was thirteen.
"You did a jigsaw puzzle in my lap once," he said.
"And you let me win at cards," Danielle said, and smiled at him.
It was a beautiful smile.
It was exactly the smile she had given her mother across the lemons.
Then she walked down the hall and into my kitchen.
