Chapter 24: Porch Roof
I carried Danielle's cake out through my bedroom window and onto the porch roof.
It was that same evening, the first cold clear one of the year, and the shingles still held a little of the day's warmth.
Below me Linden Street was going blue.
"Hand me the box," Jude said from the sill.
He folded his long self through the window in three careful pieces and sat down beside me, with his knees up to his chin.
"This is a terrible idea," he said.
"It's a porch roof," I said.
"My window opens onto it, and nobody has died yet."
Another head popped out of the window.
"Make room," Cam said.
"I have pretzels, and I have a legal pad, and I have a deep fear of heights."
"It's four feet," I said.
"It's four feet of my own death."
He crawled out on his hands and knees and sat on my other side, white to the lips.
Jude put the box on the shingles between us and cut the string with his thumbnail.
