Chapter 9: Under the Covers

I deleted Brock's text, then took a screenshot first, because I'm not stupid.

Jude stood at the window and stared into the side yard.

"I'll find him," he said.

"You'll do nothing," I said.

"He wants you to chase him. He wants a fight he can post."

"Then what do we do?"

"We tell Cam tonight," I said.

"Before Brock does."

Jude nodded slowly.

He took my face in both hands.

"Tonight," he said.

"I'll make dinner. Then I tell him, and you're beside me."

"Deal."

We shook on it, which turned into a kiss, which turned into Cam's bedroom door opening.

I jumped away.

He came down the hall in a towel and a cloud of steam, rubbing his hair.

"I'm going," he said.

"Back by eight. Don't burn the house."

He grabbed his keys, and left.

The front door shut, and the truck started up outside.

My shoulders dropped after an hour of tension.

"Eight o'clock," Jude said.

"That gives us ten hours."

"Ten hours to what?"

He looked at me, and the corner of his mouth lifted.

"To get ready."

Ten hours later Cam had not come home.

At nine he texted that his advisor had kept him late.

At ten he texted that he'd be back by eleven.

At ten-forty he texted that he was five minutes away.

Jude had made pasta and nobody had touched it.

We sat on his bed, side by side, with the door shut and the light off, waiting for headlights.

"I rehearsed it," Jude said.

"I'm going to say, 'Cam, I love your sister.'"

My heart stopped.
