Chapter 6: The Remuda

"Stay on the porch," I said.

Rance had one foot on the step already.

"There are forty head of loose horses coming at my barn."

"And if they smell an Alpha in the yard, they'll go through your barn instead of around it. Stay on the porch."

He stopped.

His eyes were still gold. I could see him fighting it.

Then he sat down on the top step and put both hands flat on the boards.

I walked out into the hay meadow in my socks.

They came up out of the creek streaming water, blowing and snorting, and swept around me in a big ring.

I knew every one of them.

The big bay gelding called Tonka, who'd taken me two years to get a saddle on. The paint mare with one blue eye. The three-year-old sorrel I'd started in June.

They slowed.

They circled.

Then, one by one, they stopped and dropped their heads and blew out through their noses.

The bay came up behind me and laid his chin on my shoulder.

He had a raw welt across his hip, the kind a rope makes when somebody swings it to hurt.

I put my hand on it and he flinched.

"Who did that?" I whispered.

He just leaned on me.

I stayed out there with them until the sky went gray.

The Jessup trucks came at seven.

Three pickups and a stock trailer, bouncing over the Crooked Creek bridge with Jessup hands in the beds holding lariats.

The horses heard the engines and lifted their heads.

Then the wind turned and they smelled the wolves.

The whole remuda bolted to the far end of the meadow and jammed up against the Bridger fence, wild-eyed.

The hands piled out anyway.

Six young wolves with ropes, spreading out across the meadow on foot.

They didn't get within fifty feet.

Every time one of them came close, the horses broke and ran past him.

One kid threw a loop at the paint mare and got dragged ten yards on his face before he let go.
