Chapter 24: Someone Closed the Switch
I didn't move.
Not my hands, not my feet, not my breath.
The conductor hung eighteen inches from my face, glazed in ice and humming.
If I'd touched it with my glove, the old lineman would have been picking me off the pole with a hook.
"Line's hot!" I yelled. "Line's hot! Somebody closed the switch!"
Below me, everything stopped.
The saw cut out.
The old lineman dropped his thermos in the snow.
"Don't touch it!" he shouted. "Liesel, don't you touch a thing!"
"I'm not touching anything!"
I keyed the radio on my shoulder.
"Foreman. The line's live. Is my tag on that switch?"
Static.
Then the foreman's voice, breathing hard.
"There's a truck at the switch," he said. "Lights off. I was walking back and I saw it. I'm going."
"Don't go alone!"
The radio went dead.
I had one ground clamp on the end of my hot stick.
Eight feet of fiberglass between my hands and seventy-two hundred volts.
The old lineman's voice came up through the sleet, very calm now.
