Chapter 13: Daddy
I didn't let go of her.
I kept my arms exactly where they were, around the owl wings and the thin shoulders under them.
"Say it one more time," I whispered. "I want to be sure I heard you."
She shook her head against my neck.
"Okay," I said. "Then I'll talk. You just listen."
"Aunt Bonnie told you a lie," I said. "A big one. Grown-ups tell them sometimes, and that's the worst one I ever heard."
Posy pulled back and looked at me in the dark.
"I'll prove it," I said. "Will you let me get Daddy?"
Her hands shot out and grabbed two fistfuls of my shirt.
She shook her head so hard the owl beak flapped.
"He won't come in unless you say so. He'll stand in the door. You can watch him the whole time."
She stared at me for a long time.
Then she let go of one fist.
Only one.
"Roscoe," I called down the stairs, not loud. "Come up. Slow."
He was already awake.
I heard his bare feet on the stairs, one step at a time.
He stopped in the doorway in his T-shirt and sweatpants.
