Chapter 20: The Song

I shut the lid.

The music stopped in the middle of a note.

Posy stood in the doorway with her hands at her sides, not over her mouth.

"Roscoe," I called, without taking my eyes off her.

He was there in two seconds, in his sock feet, a dish towel over his shoulder.

He saw the box.

He knew it before I said a word.

"That was on her dresser," he said quietly. "The morning of the funeral. Bonnie said she'd keep it safe."

Posy came out onto the cold porch in her nightgown and took the music box out of my hands.

She held it against her chest.

Then she looked up at her father.

"Daddy," she said. "What happened in the car?"

Roscoe sat down on the top step.

He didn't pick her up.

He patted the boards next to him, and she sat, and I sat on her other side with my coat around all three of us.

"It was a Tuesday," he said. "In January, right after New Year's. Mama was taking you to the doctor in town for your ear."

"It rained the night before, and then it froze."
