Chapter 25: Eight to One

At noon the doors of the boardroom opened and the chairman came out first.

He was gray in the face, and he did not look at the nine suits behind him.

"The motion carried," he said. "Eight to one."

My litigator let out a short breath through her nose.

"Mr. Keane is suspended as chief executive, effective now," the chairman said. "The auditors start this afternoon. They will have the building."

"Who voted no?" I asked.

He almost smiled.

"I think you can guess."

Desmond came out last.

Two security guards walked on either side of him, and the younger one carried a cardboard box.

Desmond saw me and stopped.

For a second the whole fortieth floor was watching, the assistants at their desks, the men in blue folders gone, the receptionist with her hand over her mouth.

He fixed his tie.

Then his face softened, and it was the face I had loved for seventeen years.

"Gwyn," he said gently. "That's enough now."

"It is."

"You've made your point. Everyone has seen it. Come home tonight and we'll fix this quietly."

He took one step toward me.

"I'll call the club. I'll have the Lake Forest gate code changed back. I'll buy you whatever you want."

"Shoes?" I said.
