Chapter 8: The Lobby

Keane Freight had a lobby three stories tall, with a marble floor and a waterfall down one wall.

I had stood in it a hundred times as the wife who came to deliver a forgotten lunch.

On Wednesday at nine, at the busiest minute of the morning, I walked in as something else.

Three hundred employees pass through that lobby before ten.

I stopped in the middle of the marble and waited until the elevators had emptied.

"Gwyneth Keane," I said to the front desk. "I'd like to see my husband."

The receptionist's face went through three expressions.

"Mr. Keane isn't available, Mrs. Keane."

"Then I'll wait here."

I sat down on the edge of the waterfall bench with a folder in my lap.

People slowed down.

Someone in a lanyard whispered to someone beside him, and I knew they'd seen the leaked photo that called me unstable.

I didn't mind.

I had come to be seen.

Ten minutes later the express elevator opened and Desmond walked out.

He moved quickly, in his navy suit, with the chief of security half a step behind him.

"Gwyneth," he said, loud enough for the balcony. "Sweetheart, you're not well. Let's get you home."

"I'm very well."

"You've been under enormous strain."

"I came for two things," I said, and I stood up. "My sketchbooks, which your movers took out of my studio on Monday. And every account statement with my name on it."

"Those are household records."

"Then I'm the household."
