Chapter 15: The Atrium

Hannah's POV

The email from Tim's lawyer said nine o'clock, to collect my personal effects.

It did not say that every employee in the building would be standing at the atrium railings.

I walked in through the front doors with Maggie at my shoulder, because she had traded a shift for it.

The guard at the desk looked at his shoes and let us pass.

Two hundred people were lined along three floors of balconies, with coffee cups and phones and no one speaking.

At the foot of the stairs stood a cardboard box with my name on it.

Beside the box stood Tim, in his charcoal suit, with the lawyer one step behind him.

The wall behind them was bare.

There was a pale rectangle on it where the first-office photo had hung.

"Hannah," Tim said, warm, for the room. "Thank you for coming. I know this isn't easy."

I stopped three feet from him and said nothing.

He turned slightly to the balconies.

"I want everyone to hear this from me," he said. "Hannah has been under strain. We've all seen it. I care about her, and I'm worried about her."

"I'm asking her, in front of the people who know her best, to sign a simple confirmation. It says she has no claims against me personally, so we can move on as a family."

The lawyer held out a pen.

Over his shoulder, on the second balcony, I saw the night-shift engineer with his phone held low.
