The interim chief executive called an all-hands for four that afternoon, on a Saturday, and every balcony in the atrium filled.

Nobody had to be told what it was for.

They had read the news, and they wanted to see it end.

I stood under the photograph with Maggie on my left and Dorothy on my right.

Colter stood at the far side of the room, among the directors, where he was supposed to stand.

Tim came in through the glass doors at four exactly.

He had slept in his suit, or had not slept.

His lawyer came behind him with a leather folder.

The atrium was so quiet I could hear the elevator running.

Tim saw the photograph first.

He saw the cracked glass, and the two people laughing in a garage, and the brass plate her assistant had screwed beneath it that morning.

*The Founders.*

*Hannah Brecker and Tim Corbin.*

His mouth worked.

"Hello, Tim," I said.

"Han." He tried for his old voice and could not find it. "Can we do this somewhere private?"

"You asked me to do it in front of two hundred people once," I said. "I think it's only fair."

The lawyer cleared his throat.

"My client is prepared to discuss a resolution. We would like to confirm that the Nevada matter is a clerical error, cured by a prior arrangement."

"You flew to Reno on Thursday," I said.

His eyes flicked up.

"The man you paid is named in your own flight notes," I said. "You found him, didn't you?"

The lawyer said nothing for a moment.
