Chapter 18: Forty Minutes

Gwendolyn's POV

The doctor gave me two hours, and a wheelchair, and a look that said she did not approve.

"Back by noon," she said. "Your daughter will want feeding, and so will you."

"I'll be back by eleven thirty."

"Show-off," Maeve said, and pushed me out.

It was Friday, two days after I had gone into labor.

My body felt wrung out, and every step Maeve took jolted me.

We reached the Harbor Grand at 9:52, by Maeve's watch, and I did not need the watch to know I was early.

The private dining room had been cleared of food.

The same long table stood in it, and the same eighteen chairs, and this time every one of them was full.

Eleanor sat halfway down the table, not at the head.

The bow-tie man had the head chair.

He stood up when he saw me.

"Mrs. Prescott," he said. "Thank you for coming so soon after your confinement. Please. Bring her to the front."

Maeve wheeled me up beside him, where everyone could see my face.

I kept my hands in my lap, and I did not look at Eleanor.

Leander sat at the far end, in the same black suit he had worn at the hospital, and he looked as if he had slept in it.

Lorna was standing by the door.

She had come without a headset and without a coat, and a man from building security was standing beside her.

"Ms. Fairchild has asked to be heard," the vice chair said. "We will hear her briefly, because she is named in the item."

"Thank you," Lorna said.

Her voice was perfectly calm.

She had put on lipstick for this.

"I want the board to understand something," she said. "I never altered a single appointment. I adjusted a clock. Leander knew, and Eleanor knew about the rule, and every one of you sat at those tables and watched Gwendolyn run in. Nobody stopped it. I only did what the family wanted done."
