Chapter 17: Atrium Footage

Margot's card still opened the doors.

Victor had locked her out of the money, and he had forgotten the building, or he wanted to watch her walk into it.

We went in at one in the morning, through the loading dock where I had come in with her spare.

Neither of us said that out loud.

We climbed to the sixth floor in the dark.

Victor's office was long and quiet, with a wall of windows and a desk that had never held a paper clip.

Behind a bookcase, Margot pressed her palm to a panel, and a steel door swung out of the wall.

"He thinks I don't know about it," she said. "I watched him open it when I was twelve."

"What's the code?"

"The day my parents died."

She typed four numbers with a steady finger.

The safe clicked.

Inside lay a black leather book, a stack of cash in bands, and a small grey drive with a label in Victor's slanting hand.

The label said, "Atrium. Sunday night."

I looked at the black book for a long moment.

It was the book I had crossed the city for.

Every man he had ruined was inside it, and I could have photographed it in ninety seconds.
