Chapter 4: The First Night

My apartment was a fourth-floor walkup in Queens with one window and a radiator that clanked.

I said sorry for it the whole way up the stairs.

Margot said, "Stop apologizing," twice, and the second time she pressed me against the wall of the landing and kissed me.

By the time I got the key in the lock, her hands were already under my coat.

The door banged open.

We didn't turn on the light.

The streetlamp through the window painted orange stripes across the floor and the unmade bed.

She pushed my coat off my shoulders and let it drop.

"I've been thinking about this since the roof," she said.

"It's been twenty-five hours."

"I'm very efficient."

I laughed, and she stopped my laugh with her mouth.

She was strong for her size, and she walked me backward across the room until the backs of my knees hit the mattress.

I sat.

I was twenty-seven, and she was twenty-six, and neither of us was in a hurry anymore.

She stood over me in her navy suit with her hair coming down.

She looked at me.

"Take off your tie," she said.

I pulled the knot loose and tossed it away.

"Now the shirt."

I undid the buttons one by one.

She watched every inch of skin come bare, and her breath changed.

"God," she said. "You're ridiculous."

"That's what the contract said."

"The contract was right."

She dropped to her knees on the rug between my legs and put her hands flat on my thighs.

My whole body went tight.

She undid my belt and my zipper, and I lifted my hips so she could pull my jeans down.

She wrapped her hand around my cock, and I swore.

It was already hard, and she looked up at me through her lashes and smiled, slow and wicked.

"You want to tell me to stop?"

"No."

"Good."

She took me in her mouth.
