My stepmother came down the hall shaking rain off a pink umbrella.
"Dermot, whose car is that blocking the..."
She stopped in the kitchen doorway.
She saw Anson first, soaked, at her table.
Then the box. Then the bottle. Then me.
Her face did three things at once and settled on a smile.
"Well," she said. "Isn't this cozy. Should I have brought dessert?"
"Sit down," my father said.
"I'm fine standing."
She said it to my father. She never said anything to me if she could help it.
I turned Anson's phone around on the oilcloth so the screen faced her.
"Three Rivers Fastener Supply," I said. "Do you know it?"
She glanced down.
It was half a second. But I'd watched Hayden's face in the boardroom, and I knew what half a second looked like.
"I've never heard of it."
"Your name's on it. Registered agent. Eight years." I tapped the screen. "At this address."
