Chapter 22: Kaylee's Price
She'd picked a baby superstore out by the mall in Robinson.
A warehouse full of cribs under fluorescent lights, a forty-minute drive from anybody who'd know her.
I told Anson where I was going.
I'd promised him the same day, every time. No more waiting.
"She said alone," he said.
"So I'm going alone. But you know where."
He didn't argue. He wrote the address on the back of his hand in pen, which made me laugh in spite of everything.
I found her in the crib aisle at two in the afternoon.
Big sunglasses. A baseball cap over her curls. A plain gray maternity dress, nothing a camera would want.
She was running her hand along the rail of a white crib, checking it for splinters.
"You came," she said.
"You asked."
"You came alone?"
"Yes."
She looked down the aisle both ways anyway.
Up close, she'd been crying again. The real kind, not the porch kind.
"It's a girl," she said. "Did you know? I found out last week."
Something in my chest moved before I could stop it.
