Chapter 19: Sixty Candles
Cynthia's sixtieth was set on the same glass porch, at the same long table, with twenty-two chairs.
The lanterns were lit along the lawn. The lake was black beyond them.
I wore the green dress.
Harrison saw it in the hall and said nothing, and then he put two fingers under my chin and looked at me for a long moment.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"It's a good dress," I said. "I'm taking it back."
The place cards were in Cynthia's handwriting again.
Hers was at the head. Dylan's sat on her right, with a card beside it that read Camille.
Nobody sat in that chair.
Mine was halfway down the left side, next to Harrison's, and I noticed Cynthia had moved us closer.
I did not think it was kindness.
The guests were Walter's sister, two cousins, three of Cynthia's friends from the garden club, the gray-bearded board chair and his wife, and a few others I had never met.
Every one of them had seen the video.
They looked at me politely and for too long.
Cynthia stood for the toast with a glass of white wine, in a champagne-colored suit.
"I am sixty tonight," she said. "I have buried a husband and raised a son, and I'm grateful to be surrounded by family."
She looked down the table at Harrison.
"All of it, even the parts that came by surprise."
Polite laughter went around.
Dylan got up next, and his glass shook a little.
"To my mother," he said, "who always knew what was best for me."
His eyes slid to the empty chair, and his mouth twisted.
