Chapter 4: Home With Two
The elevator in Elsie's building had been broken since March.
She climbed to the fourth floor with Nora in a carrier on her chest and Wyatt's car seat hooked over her arm.
Every step pulled at her stitches.
At the curb downstairs, Darius's driver had waited beside a black car with two new car seats already buckled in the back.
She had thanked him and taken a taxi.
On the second landing she had to stop and breathe.
The door of 3B opened, and the old man who lived there came out in his slippers.
"You're the girl with the husband who moved out," he said.
"Ex-husband," Elsie said.
"Good." He took the car seat out of her hand without asking. "I watched him carry his boxes down in one trip. A man who owns that little should have carried more."
He took the seat all the way up to her door, and he refused her thanks.
Her studio was exactly as she had left it four days ago.
One window, one bed, a kitchen the size of a closet, and two secondhand cribs she had bought on Craigslist and assembled herself at seven months pregnant.
The cribs were pushed against the wall, side by side.
She put the babies down one at a time and stood between them with her hand on the rail.
It was very quiet.
She had told herself for months that she would not cry in this room, and she did not.
Someone knocked, two taps and a third.
"It's me! I come bearing groceries and zero dignity!"
Imogen came in with two paper bags on her hip and a flat box under her arm.
She stopped in front of the cribs, and her whole face changed.
