Chapter 18: The Apology

I put the phone on the boards between our wet knees and pressed speaker.

"Ready?" Gail said.

"Go."

"'To the Ecklund family and the so-called harbormaster of this town,'" my mother read, in her flattest voice. "'My son has been publicly humiliated by a vindictive girl and a group of bullies. She has shown private messages without his consent. I demand that she remove every screenshot and apologize on this board within twenty-four hours. Our attorney will be at the marina on Friday morning with a letter. Mrs. Rydell.'"

Ansel looked at me.

"That's a lot of nouns," he said.

"That woman took her son's truck keys in front of a hundred and fifty people," Gail said. "She didn't write this."

"Then who did?"

"Whoever has her phone and no shame."

Gail hung up.

I lay back on the dock and stared at the moon.

"He used his mother's account," I said.

"Probably."

"He's going to show up Friday with a lawyer."

"Probably."

"I'm going to be so tired."

Ansel rolled onto his side and put his chin on my shoulder.

"I'll be there," he said.

"No hitting."

"No hitting."

"You swear?"

"I swear on the bunk of the Dolly," he said, and I laughed so hard I got lake water up my nose.

Friday at ten, Colt Rydell walked down the marina lot in a button-down shirt, carrying a folder.
