Chapter 21: Terminal

I held the ticket up in front of his face at five in the morning.

"One way," I said.

Ansel sat up on the cot with his hair in his eyes.

He looked at the paper.

He looked at me, standing there in his hoodie with the lamp behind me and a very bad expression.

"Oh," he said.

"Where is the way back?"

"It isn't booked."

"Why not?"

"Because I don't know when I get a break yet."

"You don't know."

"The team schedule doesn't come out until October. Coach says the cheap fares open when the dates do." He rubbed his face. "Lottie, I wasn't hiding it. I was going to book Thanksgiving the first day I could. I wrote it on my hand."

"On your hand?"

He held out his left palm.

There was nothing on it.

"It washed off in the quarry," he said.

I stared at him.

Then I started to laugh, helplessly, and sat down on the cot, and he put his arms around me.

"I thought you were leaving for good," I said.

"I'm leaving for four years of school."

"It looked like for good."

"It was the cheapest ticket." He kissed my hair. "I'm sorry. I should've said."
