Chapter 24: One Kiss
Thanksgiving dinner was at two, and it started late because Mr. Okerlund stood at the stove arguing with my mother about the gravy.
"It needs flour," he said.
"It needs to be left alone."
"It needs flour, Gail."
"It needs you out of my kitchen, Okerlund."
She had never called him by his first name in front of me.
She went pink to the roots of her hair, and he went pinker, and Ansel and I looked at each other across the table.
"Nobody says a word," I whispered.
"I'm not saying a word."
"You're about to."
"I'm saying nothing. Loudly."
Bea came in at ten past two with her braid flung over her shoulder and a pie she had made herself, which was frightening.
She had driven home from Central Michigan the night before and gone straight to the diner to work a double.
"I missed everything," she said to Ansel, plunking down the pie. "I had a front row seat reserved for months, and you two went and did it without me."
"We did tell you," I said.
"You told me by text. It's not the same."
"What did you want, a ticket?"
"I wanted a full report. In person. With feelings."
