Chapter 4: Pay Up

I picked up the phone.

It wasn't locked, because men like Colt Rydell never think anybody will touch their things.

I scrolled up.

The chat had been going since the Fourth of July.

It had four members, and every one of them had a boat or a father with a boat.

The first message was from Colt, on July 5th.

"Pool. $50 each. First one to get Ecklund's little project into a truck before she leaves for college. She's been prissy for years. Time to fix that."

Under it, Boat Bro had written a row of laughing faces.

Under that, somebody else had asked, "What if she says no?"

Colt had answered, "They don't."

I read it twice.

Then I took my own phone out of my back pocket and photographed every screen, one at a time, from the first message down to the last.

My hands were steady.

That surprised me.

I thought I'd be crying.

Further down, the chat had a message about Ansel.

"The Okerlund kid follows her around like a golden retriever. Keep him busy, or he'll get in the way."

Boat Bro had answered, "Lol. He's a nobody. Rows, fixes things, doesn't talk."

Colt had written, "She's never even looked at him."

I took that one twice.

I was still holding the phone when boots crunched in the gravel behind me.

"Hey!"

Colt came across the grass at a half run, with his shirt pulled crooked.

"What are you doing? That's mine."

"You left it on the log." I held it out, screen up. "My name was on it."

He took it and thumbed the screen, and I watched his face go from flushed to white.
