Chapter 23: What You Scored
On Monday morning two hundred people stood in the loading bay of Haldorsen Freight, between the trucks, and waited for the chair to speak.
Drivers, dispatchers, mechanics and clerks had come in off their routes. The refrigeration units hummed behind them.
I stood to one side with Jonas. I had not wanted to come, and the chair had asked me to.
He stood on a pallet jack in his navy blazer with a single sheet of paper.
"I'm the acting chief executive," he said. "I'll keep this short. Some of you read the newspaper. The rest saw the video."
Nobody laughed. A mechanic in the front row lowered his eyes.
"Mr. Haldorsen no longer works here. This company will go on, and your jobs are safe."
A ragged cheer went up, and then it faded.
"One more matter," the chair said. "Carissa Moen, please come forward."
She was standing at the back by a forklift, in the pink cardigan, with her hair down.
She walked the whole length of the bay between the two lines of people.
Nobody spoke to her. Nobody moved aside. She stopped at the foot of the pallet jack with her hands at her sides.
"Ms. Moen," the chair said. "Our examiner has finished with the devices. You entered one hundred and four of the two hundred and twelve log entries yourself, from your company laptop, on company time."
"Yes, sir."
"You also used the company phone tracker to tell Mr. Haldorsen where his wife was, fourteen times."
"Yes."
"And you sat in a boardroom three weeks ago and faked a medical emergency to interrupt a shareholder."
"Yes," Carissa said. "I did."
