Chapter 7: The Kitchen
I woke in the gray dark before dawn to an empty bed and the smell of coffee.
I pulled on his flannel shirt and followed the smell down three flights of pine stairs.
The lodge kitchen was a long room with copper pots and a scarred oak table, and a counter running the length of the east wall.
Tavish stood at the stove in jeans and nothing else.
His back was bare and broad, with the pale mark of my nails across it in two long red lines.
I stopped in the doorway to enjoy the view.
"I can hear you smiling," he said, without turning.
"I can't believe you cook."
"I make eggs."
"Do you make them shirtless?"
"I make them however I like."
I crossed the floor on bare feet and slid my arms around his waist from behind.
He went still for half a second, and then he set down the spatula and covered my hands with his.
"Morning," he said.
"Morning."
"Sore?"
"I'm wonderful."
"That isn't what I asked."
"Yes," I said. "A little. In a very good way."
He turned in my arms.
His eyes went to the open collar of the shirt, and then to my bare legs, and stayed there.
"That's my shirt."
"It's mine now."
