Chapter 16: Trustees
"Please do," said a man's voice from table six.
The oncologist stood up in his rented tuxedo, and his chair scraped the floor.
"I would welcome it," he said. "In a lawsuit I get to put my records in front of a judge."
Roberta's finger stayed pointed at him, and it trembled.
"I have the phone log from February eleventh," he said. "I have two letters, one certified, and the green card with a signature."
"You had no right to..."
"I was her doctor, Mrs. Harrowby. I had every right to warn her family, and you made sure it didn't reach one."
He sat down.
The hematologist stood beside him.
"I'll add mine," he said. "I wrote to the hospital's ethics committee three times about the suite program. Each letter was returned with a note from the board chair's office."
At the front table, a gray-haired man in a dark suit went very still.
"Those notes came from my office?" he said.
"Signed by your assistant."
"At whose request?"
The hematologist looked at the stage.
"Ask her," he said.
The gray-haired man rose.
