Chapter 20: Gravestone
The cemetery sat on a hill above the river, and the wind up there smelled of leaves.
Finley drove slowly, with both hands on the wheel, and Lester sat behind me in the back seat with a blanket across his knees.
The nurse had given me a dose an hour before and told Finley, "She has two hours of clear head. Don't waste them."
He had not said a word since the gate.
My mother's stone was near the oak at the end of the third row.
It was gray and small, and someone had cleaned the lichen off it.
Lester cleared his throat.
"I come on Sundays," he said. "I bring her tomatoes in the summer."
"I know," I said. "She told me you were a bad gardener."
"She lied."
Finley parked, and came around, and opened my door.
I did not let him carry me.
I took the cane the nurse had left, and his arm, and we crossed the wet grass one step at a time.
Lester went on ahead and stood at the oak with his hat off.
The stone said my mother's name and two dates.
