Chapter 21: The Blade
The Alpha did not take the blade.
He looked at it, and at the boy holding it, and the whole circle waited to see what he would do.
"Explain this," the Alpha said.
"It is simple," said Lucian. "My father has forbidden me to stand by Miss Pengelly. You have forbidden your son the same."
"So?"
"So I am offering you the first blow in his place."
"If you wish to hurt someone for burning an order, hurt the one whose family wrote the first."
"Lucian," said the Regent, from across the brazier.
His voice was hardly more than a breath.
Lucian did not turn.
"I also renounce the succession of the Ashgrave court," he said, clearly, to both sides of the ring.
"I give up the seat, the name, the Regency, and every claim my father has laid on me."
A cry went up from the western side, small and sharp.
"Say that again," said the old woman in black.
"I renounce it," said Lucian. "In the circle, before the stones, and before the Alpha of the Kendricks."
