Chapter 25: Static
Declan stared at Eli in silence.
"Of course you can hear that," he said.
"I told you in the loft."
"With a mug of tea. Yes."
He hung the dish towel over the tomato cage.
"I think I may have been trying not to know it."
"Know it now."
"Fine." Declan drew a breath. "I don't want to leave Philadelphia."
He said it aloud, in his flat, level, courtroom voice.
And in Eli's head, the same words came a half-second behind, wrong.
"I don't want to leave Phila-"
Then they cut out in a hiss of static.
Eli put his hand on the fence.
"Do that again."
"I don't want to leave Philadelphia."
Static.
"What happened?" said Declan.
"You said it, and I heard you say it, and then I heard you think it, and then I didn't."
"That sounds like a technical fault."
"It sounds," Eli said, with a rising panic he tried to hide, "like the sound going out of a speaker."
Declan tilted his head.
"Interesting. Say another one."
"I'd like to kiss you."
Eli heard it in the air.
He heard it in his head as a faint crackle, and then nothing at all behind his own heartbeat.
