Chapter 27: Reinstated
Eli opened the envelope at the kitchen counter, with Declan standing beside him in yesterday's shirt.
There were two sheets, thick and cream-colored, with a silver crest at the top and a signature in blue ink.
Maggie had come in off her shift at seven forty and stopped dead in the doorway.
She looked at Declan, then at Eli, then at the couch cushions on the floor.
"I'm going to make toast," she said, "and not ask a single question."
"Thank you."
"I'll ask them later. All of them."
Eli read the letter aloud, because his hands were too unsteady to read it silently.
"'Dear Mr. Donnelly. The Board of the Kronborg Foundation has examined the minutes of the jury of that year.'"
"'We have also read the correspondence supplied to us this month.'"
He stopped, and started again.
"'We find that the candidate Eli Donnelly was withdrawn on information that did not warrant it.'"
"'The motion was made by a juror with an interest he did not declare.'"
Declan's breath went out of him.
