Chapter 14: The Cell
"Kerensa," I said. "Kerensa Valdrath."
It was strange to hear it in my own mouth after so long.
Torin sat down on the cot, heavily.
"The Queen," he said. "The drowned one."
"Yes."
"Who drowned in a river five years ago."
"Who did not."
He rubbed his face with one hand and laughed, once, with no joy in it.
"I put an iron ring on the Queen of Aurend," he said. "In a chapel with a sleeping priest."
"You said it was ugly."
"It is ugly."
"I like it."
His hand stopped on his face, and he looked at me through his fingers.
"Sit," he said.
I sat beside him, and I told him all of it in the cold with the grey blanket around our shoulders.
He did not interrupt once, even when I told him about the girl upstairs.
When I was done he sat quiet for so long that I thought I had lost him.
"You could have told me in the hall," he said at last. "When I stood up and said wife."
"You would have been a fool to marry me."
"I was a fool to marry you without knowing. That is not the same."
