Chapter 21: What Aldous Owes
The steward opened the great book on the floor and read in the thin steady voice of a man who had practiced for years.
"The fourth night of the coup," he said.
"Thirty crowns to the captain of the guard for the seizure of an infant from the royal midwife."
A sound went through the hall.
"The first spring. Orders to reduce the dragon's ration by half. The second spring, by half again. The third, to a bucket a week."
He turned a page.
"Eleven children of the northern houses and four of the southern were taken from their mothers as wards."
"They were shipped to the Dragonwatch under the seal of the Regent."
Lords stirred on the floor.
A tall man in the blue of the southern coast came up out of the crowd with his hand pressed to his mouth.
"My son," he said. "My son went to be a page."
"He is at the Dragonwatch," said the steward gently. "Third cell on the east side."
The southern lord turned and looked at Aldous.
He did not say anything.
He only walked up to him, took hold of the Regent's right hand, and slid a heavy gold ring from his forefinger.
