Chapter 17: The Terrace

I walked up the drive alone, with Dominic one step behind me, and I told Nico's men to stay at the gate.

My father's Beretta was in my waistband under the black coat.

Gemma watched me come with her gun against Aurelio's temple.

Six of her men stood along the terrace wall, in dark jackets, with their hands near their belts.

"Far enough," she said.

I stopped at the foot of the white steps.

"Hello, Ilaria."

"Gemma."

"You brought him." She looked past me, and her whole face softened, and it made me sick. "Hello, Dominic."

"Let him go, Gem," Dominic said.

"I will. When she gives me the book."

The leather case sat open on the stone table beside her.

The book lay inside it, and next to it stood a brass lighter and a silver dish.

"You want me to burn the page," I said.

"I want the page burned by the hand that signed under it. Then there's no Sorrentino heir and no oath, and the Ferraros keep what they have."

"And what do you get?"

"Him." She smiled at Dominic. "I always did."

Aurelio's face was gray, but his voice came out dry and steady.

"Donna, do not burn it."

Gemma tightened her arm, and he stopped talking.

"Tell me how it went," I said.

"What?"

"The hill. You've been holding it for weeks, and you want somebody to hear it."

She stared at me for a moment, and something moved behind her pale eyes.

She was proud, and she wanted a witness.

"It was cold," she said. "I lay in the grass above the third curve for an hour. The silver car came out of the tunnel right on time."

Nobody on that terrace moved.

"Two shots in the tire. One went through the driver, by accident. The car stopped against the rock, and I walked down."

"Gemma," Dominic said hoarsely.

"Your wife's father was dead already. Her mother was still holding his hand." She looked straight at me. "She spoke a single word, and it was your name."
