Chapter 20: The Verdict
By Wednesday night the back room of the club held every man who had ever worn a gold seahorse.
The Ferraro captains filled the left side, the Neapolitans the right, and the heads of the four allied houses sat at the long table in the middle.
At the foot of it, on two straight chairs, sat the underboss and Gemma.
Their hands were tied in front of them.
Gemma's right hand was wrapped in white gauze from the wrist to the knuckles.
I took my father's place at the head of the table, with Aurelio on my left.
Dominic stood against the wall behind me, where I'd asked him to stand.
"I will say the charges once," I said. "Then you can answer them."
The room went still.
"The charge is the Amalfi road. Everyone in this room has heard who stood on the hill, and who sent her."
I heard a chair creak somewhere.
"He gave her the map and the hour. He did it so an oath his own boss had signed would die with my family."
"Donna," the underboss said, in a voice like a closing door. "You will want to remember who raised the man you're married to."
"I remember," I said. "He raised a boy who believed him."
"I did it for the house."
"You did it for yourself. Then, when you found out I was alive, you sent a rifle to my mother's grave and a bomb under my seat."
"Who says it was me?"
"Your own men," I said, "who stood up in this room on Friday and walked out behind you, and have been sitting in the corner since Saturday night, waiting to see whether they walk out of here."
The men near the back of the room looked at their shoes.
One of them stood up.
"It was him," the man said. "He gave us the casings. I loaded the shooter's rifle with my own hands, and I am sorry."
