Chapter 11: The Owner Arrives

The Aurora ballroom held six hundred people for galas and sixty rows of folding chairs on a morning like this one.

Every chair was full.

Dealers stood in the aisles in their white shirts.

Housekeepers, valets and line cooks packed the back wall, shift change and shift start together, whispering.

The night crew stood in a clump on the left, still in their gray smocks.

Dot held my sleeve.

On the stage, behind a podium with the Aurora crest, stood a woman in a pale gray suit.

I knew every stitch of it.

I had been in the room when she bought it.

Leigh Kincade's ash-brown hair was down around her shoulders instead of pinned, a style I had never seen on her.

She wore big sunglasses, indoors, and a gold pocket watch on a chain pinned to her lapel.

It was my grandfather's watch.

I had left it in the top drawer of my desk.

Desmond stood a step behind her, with a white bandage on his wrist and the happiest face I had ever seen on him.

Reuben leaned against the side wall near the stage with his arms folded.

He wasn't looking at the stage.

He was looking at me.

"Good morning," Leigh said into the microphone. "Please sit."

Six hundred chairs scraped.

She smiled.

It was a good smile, warm and practiced, the one she used on the board.

"My name is Veronica Ellington."

The room went completely, perfectly silent.

The blood left my head.

"I own the Aurora," Leigh said. "Some of you know that. Most of you never saw my face, and that is on me. My grandfather was a private man, and I have been more private than I should."
