Chapter 8: Leigh's Voice

I called her back from the sixth-floor stairwell, where the cameras ended.

Leigh picked up on the first ring.

"Ronnie," she said, warm as a bath. "Are you all right? You sound out of breath."

"I'm fine. Leigh, how did you know I was on fourteen?"

"The badge. It pings the door sensors. I set it up so I could watch over you."

She said it.

"I didn't know it did that."

"You were busy, darling. I handle the details. That's what I'm for."

Her voice was soft and low, the one she used at board dinners.

For four years it had made me feel safe.

Tonight it made the back of my neck itch.

"Leigh, someone upstairs used the word sale."

A very small pause.

"Oh, that," she said. "That is Desmond being Desmond."

"Is there an offer?"

"There are always offers. Three arrived this autumn. I answered each with a polite no. You never needed to see them."

"He says I'm announcing it."

"He says a lot of things. He's a man who needs to feel important." She laughed gently. "Ronnie, nothing will be signed that you haven't read. I promise."

"Then why does he think it will?"

"Because he's a fool and a bully, which is why you're down there in the first place." She sighed. "Do you want me to come to the Aurora? I'll put him in his place."

"No. Not yet."

"Good. It would spoil your investigation."

"Leigh," I said. "Has the owner's office ever received complaints from staff? Letters, emails, calls, about Finnegan?"

"Never."

"Not one?"

"If there were, I'd have told you first," she said, and her voice was perfectly smooth. "The complaint line is monitored. The surveys are anonymous. You've seen the numbers yourself."

"I've seen what I was shown."
