Chapter 18: The Brown Wolf

It was Nils at the foot of the stairs.

He stood with a coil of orange extension cord in his hand and his ears bright red.

"The heater," he said to the ceiling. "I came to unplug it. For the hay. Fire hazard."

"Thank you," said Roe, from the bales, with no expression at all.

"I'm going now."

"Good night, Nils."

He went.

We lay in the hay and shook with laughter until the lantern swung.

A week later, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I woke at dawn and my body told me the truth.

It was a good day.

It was the best one in two months.

My thighs felt like thighs.

My hands closed all the way.

The pain sat at a zero.

I stood at the parlor window in Roe's flannel and watched the sun come up over the ridge.

Frost lay on the pasture, white and flat.

Past the cows, the hill rose in a long bare line of oak and red leaves,

and the light ran along the top of it like a rope.

I had not been up on that ridge in five years.

Roe came in behind me with two mugs, and stopped.

"You're up early."

"I want to shift," I said.

He set the mugs down on the sill very slowly.

"You know what it costs."

"Three days. In bed, flat, I know. I've done the math."

"The math says you won't be able to stand until Tuesday."

"Then you'll bring me soup on Tuesday. Roe, I'm tired of being a woman who lives in the house of her own body with all the lights off."
