Chapter 22: Midwinter

The solstice came on a Monday, and it was the coldest night of the year.

Sixty-eight trucks parked in the snow along Ridge Road, because the farmyard was full.

Inside the big barn, someone had hung four hundred paper lanterns from the beams.

They glowed gold and white over the barn floor, which Nils and his crew had scrubbed to bare concrete and strewn with clean straw.

The cows had been moved to the north barn for the night.

They lowed about it.

I sat in a chair in the little side room by the feed bins, with my mother kneeling in front of me.

"Hold still," said Birgit, around a mouthful of pins.

"I am holding still."

"Your sleeve is a mess."

"It's my sleeve, Mama."

She was hemming the cuff of a dress she had made in nine nights.

It was deep green wool, long-sleeved and plain,

with a high neck and a skirt full enough that I could climb the barn stairs without lifting it.

There was a little built-in pocket on the left for my pencil.

"It looks like a dress I'd choose," I said.

"I used one of your flannels for the pattern. I took it from your closet on Tuesday."
