Chapter 15: The Tea

The Beta's house sat just inside my mile, and I ran every step of it.

Halvard ran beside me with his bag.

The lights were blazing in the kitchen.

Bess lay on the sofa with her knees up and a towel under her, gray in the face.

"Don't," she said, when she saw me. "Don't look like that. I'm fine."

"I'll decide that."

I knelt and put my hand on her belly.

Everything I knew came up through my fingers, calm and cold.

The belly was soft.

The cramps came in slow waves, ten minutes apart, easing as I held her.

"Any gush?" I asked.

"No. Just spotting. It started an hour ago."

"Pain here? Here?"

"A little. Neve, is the baby..."

"We'll hear her in one minute."

I took the little doppler out of the clinic kit Halvard had thought to bring.

I smeared gel on her skin.

Static, then a quick, hard galloping sound, a hundred and fifty beats a minute.

Bess burst into tears.

The Beta, kneeling by her head, put his face in her hair.

"She's strong," I said. "The bleeding is light, and it's slowing. It's a threat, not a loss. She needs the hospital in Ely, tonight, and bed rest after."

"Then you come too," Bess said.

"I can't. I'm inside a mile of the lake."

Her face crumpled.

"It's all right," I said. "He'll drive you. I'll tell them everything on the phone."

"What did you eat, Bess?" Halvard said quietly.

She blinked.

"What?"

"Today. Last night. Anything unusual."

"Just supper. Stew." She frowned. "And the tea."

I went very still.
