Chapter 23: Warm Front
By midnight the eaves were running.
The chinook had come down off the plains, and the whole lakeshore smelled of wet pine and thawing dirt.
Halvard and I stood on the porch with the bonfire's glow behind the trees and the dog asleep against the door.
It was forty degrees.
I had not been warm outdoors in months.
"You walked me through the whole pack," he said.
"I did."
"They'll be talking for a month."
"Let them."
I turned to face him and put my back against the cabin wall.
The logs were damp and smooth, warmed all day by the stove on the other side.
I took hold of his coat and pulled him in until his chest pressed mine.
"Tonight you lead," I said.
His eyes went dark in the porch light.
"Say it again."
"Tonight, Halvard, you take what you want, and I take all of it."
He made a sound low in his chest, half groan, half laugh.
Then he kissed me.
It was nothing like the first kiss on the snow or the one in the storm.
It was slow, and it had weight, and it went on until my knees had no opinion of standing.
