Chapter 27: Blood on the Snow

I crawled to him on my belly across the groaning shelf, with a wolf's claws biting the ice.

I took his collar in my teeth and dragged.

The ice cracked behind my back legs with every pull.

I did not let go until the stones of the shore were under my paws.

Then I shifted, naked in the snow, and put both hands over the knife.

"Nobody touch it," I said to the dark. "Nobody."

Lucan was beside me.

His mouth was bleeding and his good hand shook, and he got his shoulder under Halvard's arm without a word.

Between us we carried him into the cabin, and I laid him on the table, on the oilcloth that still held the Warden's book.

Someone threw a coat over my shoulders.

I tore open the clinic bag.

I am a nurse, and my hands knew what to do while the rest of me screamed.

The blade had gone in under the left ribs and skidded on bone.

I listened to both lungs with my ear against his chest, and they moved.

The bridge on the county road had washed out that afternoon, so there would be no ambulance.

I drew the knife out in one clean pull and pressed a wad of gauze into the wound with all my weight.

Halvard's eyes opened.

"That hurt," he said.

"Good. Stay awake."

"Did it get him?"
