Chapter 16: Church Basement

Jens read the headline over Tova's head.

Then he took the phone out of her hand, very gently, and turned it face down on the counter.

"Pancakes," he said.

"Dad. What's an affair?"

"It's a word for when grown-ups are wrong about a calendar."

Tova looked at me.

I was still holding my coffee, and my hand wasn't steady.

"Are they wrong?" she asked.

"Yes," I said. "And I have the calendar."

The phone buzzed face down for the rest of breakfast.

Jens stood at the stove with his back to me.

"This is my fault," he said. "I kissed you on a porch. Like an idiot."

"I kissed you."

"I've had every driver in this city filming trucks for a month. I know what a long lens looks like."

"Jens. Turn around."

He turned around with a spatula.

"I signed those papers on January 9 at the mayor's own table," I said. "She stood behind his chair and watched me do it. They're the ones who don't want anybody to look at a calendar."

The divorce was final on Monday at 11:40.

My lawyer and I sat on a wooden bench outside a courtroom in the county building, and a clerk came out with a stamped decree and a pen.

Legally, on paper, the name I'd written on the last page in January.

Anders was at the far end of the hallway.

He'd come alone, no lawyer, in a sweater instead of the camel coat.

He waited until my lawyer went to get the car.

"I saw the paper," he said.

"Everybody saw the paper."

"Mom's office called me Saturday. They wanted the date we separated. For a statement." He looked at his hands. "I told them to look it up in the minutes of her own dining room."

I studied him. He looked like a man who'd been eating cereal for supper.
